With the birth of my good friend’s baby, I’ve been expanding my sew along listings to include baby sewing projects! I’m very excited to share with you my first tutorial on how to make a onesie. This kawaii onesie pattern for babies features cute animal designs sewn in very soft fleece fabric. You can pick from a bear, unicorn, rabbit, and more tiny animal onesies. I wanted originally to make the baby unicorn onesie BUT Simplicity requires you to go online to get the rest of the instructions. Who has time for that? Certainly not me! Between running a sewing blog and having a singing career here in New York, I’m lucky to find time to sew at all. Without further ado, here are the ins and outs of sew along Simplicity pattern 8776, sewing a baby onesie.
How To Sew A Onesie
Before You Start Sewing
Before you start your baby sewing project, be sure to wash and preshrink your fabric. Fleece fabric will shrink a little after it’s dried. How awful would it be to complete your sewing DIY only to find out once it’s washed that it no longer will fit the baby? That’s no fun for anyone. I washed and dried my fleece fabrics together because there were both light colored pastels. If you decide to sew your baby onesie in two very different, contrasting fabric colors, be sure to wash them separately. That way yours color won’t bleed. After you’ve washed both colors at least once, that should stop or at least curtail any future color bleeding. After the babies onesie is complete it should then be safe to wash and dry everything together.
What You’ll Need:
- Scissors
- 1 Zipper
- Sewing Machine
- Fleece Material
- Thread To Match
- Simplicity Pattern 8766
- A baby to enjoy it!
If you want to learn to sew a baby onesie, you can follow along with the sewing instructions in the YouTube video here. This was the second of my Simplicity sew alongs, and the first baby pattern review I’ve ever done. It was very fun and hardly took any time at all. So grab yourself a glass of wine, a cookie, and all of your materials and let’s make this kawaii thing!
Did you change anything?
Well about that…I didn’t “change” any of the instructions, but there was a bump in the road. The front of the pattern features these pleated designs so that the baby can move around comfortably. The only problem with that, is that the back pattern piece doesn’t have those same pleats. So when you go to sew the front pieces(which are the same size) to the back pieces at the sides, all of the sudden you have two vastly different sized pieces. You can see this in the video above if you follow along with Simplicity sew along 8776. You’ll be able to see how much I have to stretch my pattern pieces to get them to fit together. Other than that, sewing a onesie for a baby using pattern 8776 is easy. I finished this baby sewing project in about four to four and a half hours on a saturday morning. Unfortunately for me, I had to wake up at 6 AM to do it, but it did get done!
Making A Onesie For A Baby Is Easy!
You will have to stretch the pieces out a little bit, you shouldn’t let that deter you! It’s still very easy to sew. Fortunate enough for us, since the baby onesie is made in fleece material, it’s very easy to move around. Super pliable, and very forgiving, I think this is an excellent project for beginner sewers. If you learn to sew a onesie using my sewing tutorial, please share your finished project with me. I would really love to see what you make.
